About GRiT

When we step out in faith to become ministers of the Gospel, we enter a spiritual and physical battlefield that has life, death, and eternal outcomes. The stress of the battle we face does not only cause emotional, relational, and physical damage, it empowers our flesh – our sinful nature. When flesh is empowered, its ultimate outcome is ministry death.

Ministers of the Gospel need to know how to deal with stress-empowered flesh, especially as they reach out to dangerous or hazardous areas. By dealing with stress-empowered flesh, international workers develop Godly resilience – resilience that is rooted in a deepening of their relationship with God.

In this six-week course, Dr. Hamilton Burke will draw on his experience as an Air Force psychologist and twenty-plus years of overseas ministry to walk you through the spiritual, neuroscientific, and psychological processes that underlie the battle you are fighting. You will learn how your brain processes the stress you face and how to identify the “fleshly vulnerabilities” the enemy has planted in you. You will also learn the importance of your God-empowered spirit in regulating brain functioning, how God’s grace and love for you sets the whole spiritual-neuroscientific system to its optimal level of functioning, and how your relationship with God provides resilience over your flesh and stress.

Audience

GRiT is specifically designed for international workers who are serving in the most stressful of places. It is based on Dr. Burke’s book series Effective Kingdom Service in Hostile Places: Advanced Training and Support for International Workers and the Organizations that Send Them (available on Amazon). GRiT is an intensive college level on-line course that requires six weeks to complete. Each lesson consists of a short video, reading assignments (60 to 80 pages a week), discussion questions with others in the cohort, and a short quiz.  Dr. Burke will also offer a real-time weekly session via Zoom to discuss and emphasize the ideas learned in the self-study lessons.  Most participants find that each lesson requires 8 to 10 hours to complete. Two more weeks of bonus materials (with recommendations for providing support and member care to those serving in hostile places) will be provided for those interested.

“Wow! I wish I had this 30 years ago! I see how the principles outlined in this book led to my demise working overseas. Fortunately, now as member care providers, we can help others put these principles into play early in their service. Dr. Burke uniquely connects 1) current brain research, 2) experience working with international workers, with 3) an understanding of the underlying spiritual dynamics. Amazing integration at a high level!”              –Dr. R.M.

“Combining fascinating scientific explanations with strong Biblical applications, Dr. Burke provides excellent and very practical tools for cross cultural workers and the churches and organizations that send them. Even after more than three decades of cross-cultural ministry I learned very valuable lessons from these materials. This is a must read for both those preparing for cross cultural ministries and for those who are already involved in Kingdom service. “

“I felt like all of the material regarding trauma and stress were especially helpful due to the context I am ministering in. It was helpful for me and my team but also for the local church leadership and the communities we are working in.”
